Xbox Update Dossier: Xbox Network Outage Fixed & Back Online

[Update 2] Scott Van Vliet, CTO of the Xbox brand, has provided a post-mortem following today's earlier Xbox Network outage. A bug slipped through when a client update was deployed to improve the player experience. This impacted a single region, which became overloaded and caused players to experience issues with signing in, creating new accounts, and accessing games like Minecraft and Roblox.

The good news - aside from the quick post-mortem, which is great for transparency - is that the team has identified several improvements to their deployment process to catch similar issues before they roll out in the future.

I wanted to provide an update on the sign-in and sign-up issues that affected some players this morning over a ~2 hour period, primarily on PC and other XBOX experiences (console was not impacted).

[Update] Microsoft has shared that engineering has confirmed mitigation, meaning Xbox Network is back-up and fully functioning. Signing in and creating an account should be back to normal now.

[Original report] Reported on September 2, 2026, a major Xbox Network system-wide disruption (Incident ID: 4661) is blocking core account authentication across Xbox consoles, PC, and mobile platforms.
